What, if any, memorable or special book have you ever gotten as a present? Birthday or otherwise. What made it so notable? The person who gave it? The book itself? The “gift aura?”
This is the first time I have participated in "Booking Through Thursday," and something makes me wish I had a more sophisticated answer than the truthful one which I will offer here. My grandfather and his sister, my Aunt Connie, always told me that books were not luxuries like toys but the basic necessities of life. When either of them took me to a book store, I never heard the word "No." Nancy Drew was an obsession of mine as a little girl. The girl detective was everything I fancied myself to be and more - strong, smart, courageous, a good person. I waited for each new yellow-spined volume like it's publication date was Christmas. My aunt bought me tons of them over the years including a few collectible editions all of which I still own. Despite the fact that the teacher in her wanted me to read more "serious literature" (and I did that as well), she indulged this obsession of mine because she knew I saw who I wanted to be in these books.
