Have never participated in
Musing Mondays before but this week's topics was too interesting to pass up.
"We all know the old adage about not judging a book by its cover, but just how much sway does a book cover have when it comes to your choice of book, whether buying or borrowing? Are there any books you've bought based on the cover alone?"
Book design has a huge impact upon what I choose to read and buy. Check out the top of my right sidebar for some of my favorite book design sites. Or look at yesterday's post where I talked about Mick Wiggins's appealing designs one of which is featured above.
Publishers have been forced to re-invent the way they market books as they compete with downloadable versions of the same material. The result has been an explosion of outstanding design the last several years. Both the behemoths and small or boutique publishers are producing treasures for the hands. Those of us who covet and collect have been on the receiving end of all this creativity and high production value.
Some of my latest covets:
This image was recently featured on
FaceOut Books. The dust jacket is great but I really loves what lies beneath. Been seeing more and more of this too. The good news is that the paperback version of the book arrives in August so you may soon be able to snag a remaindered copy of this hardcover edition.
Have big
Vintage Classics love. These Iris Murdoch re-releases are at the top of my wish list right now.
Since I also have a lot of love for
Faber & Faber,
this book (you should see the insides) is a must book design mavens.
And last but not least, Dave Egger's The Wild Things is due out this fall along with all other things Where the Wild Things Are.
Standard or
furry? Or both?
