Martin's Big Words by Doreen Rappaport, illustrated by Bryan Collier. One of the best children's books ever. Stunning, vibrant images mixed with large and highlighted quotes from Dr. King that punctuate the lean but powerful prose. The kids I teach affectionately joke me that I cannot get to the end without tears in my eyes.
This morning, as part of the national call to service, the school where I work invited volunteers from all over the country, here in DC for the big event, to come into the school for a readathon (more later) with the kids. It was a moving experience as we all shared some of Martin's biggest words:
"Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."
How do you like to celebrate or remember Martin Luther King Jr.?
